VOCATIONAL SERVICE is a fun category for us because we love taking Vocational tours all around the island of Maui.  Listed below are the projects and activities that we did during the 2009-10 Rotary year AND WE TOOK FIRST RUNNER-UP IN THIS CATEGORY.

 

  • Club Program featuring 4-Way Test with description of the Andy & Elmer Ethics & 4-Way Test activity with 2nd graders
  • Vocational talks by our new members
  • Tours of Four Maui Businesses:  Back of the House of the Grand Wailea Resort, Pacific Whale Sancturary Education Prograns, Leilani Farms Sanctuary, Boys and Girls Club of Maui Central Club House
  • Employee Recognition of the staff of The Five Palms Resturant
  • Youth Mentoring Program - "What Every Waverider Should Know" for 6th graders at Lokelani Middle School
  • Youth Mentoring Program - "Andy and Elmer Apple Dumpling Adventure" - 3 lessons based on the 4-Way test presented to 2nd graders at two Kihei elementary schools
  • Vocational Service Awards for Excellence in Literacy Activities presented to a teacher at Kihei and Kamalii Elementary Schools
  • Paul Harris Recognition presented to principals at Kihei and Kamalii Elementary Schools on as a result of contributions from Charter Member Dr. John Moore

YOUTH SERVICES  IS A DIVISION IN THIS CATEGORY AND WE TOOK FIRST RUNNER-UP IN THIS CATEGORY AS WELL..  These are the Youth Service projects that we organized and took part in this year: 

  • Sponsored Rotaract of MCC with contributions to attend the D5000 Conference
  • Camp RYLA - two of our members serve as co-directors of this 90-student camp.  15 of our members participated and some members made personal contributions to support additional camp activities and programs
  • Our club sponsors the Capanash/Corbett Memorial Scholarship for a student at Kihei Charter HS.  We also support and sponsor the HRYF program; two Kahmehameha HS students received $5000 awards from this program
  • Mentoring/Ethics Projects:  "Andy and Elmer Apple Dumpling Adventure" presented in 3 lessons to 350 2nd grade students at two local elementary schoolls.  "What Every Waverider Should Know" - taught by club members to 8th graders to present to 6th graders at Lokelani Intermediate School
  • 550 Dictionaries presented to 3rd and 4th graders at two elementary schools
  • Keiki Kupboard/School Supplies Drive - had drive and presented  collected supplies, proceeds + additional funds to stock throughout the year Kupboards at two elementary schools
  • Hawaiian Humpback Whale Sanctuary Education Programs - provided financial assistance for educational materials
  • Read Aloud America Program - 1/2 of club members participate as Volunteer Readers for this evening program at five local Maui elementary schools
  • Newspapers In Education - provide funding for class set of newspapers for a social studies teacher at Lokelani Intermediate School
  • Books to School Libraries - in lieu of speaker's gift, presented $800 of books to to local elementary school libraries
  • School in Crisis Funding - Presented financial assistance to a local Maui elementary school when fire gutted three classrooms
